February Focus: What should I be focusing on right now with my recruiting efforts?

With the season kicking off for both high school and college programs, many college coaches put recruiting on the backburner. College coaches are turning their attention to their own teams now that they are in season. There are 4 things you should be focusing on over the next few months:

  1. Now is the best time to do your “administrative” work for your recruiting. This includes, but isn’t limited to, things like: updating your priorities list and updating your target list with schools that you might be interested in now based on any priorities that you’ve added or changed. It’s also important to start crossing schools off the list that are no longer actively recruiting for your class, or that you are no longer interested in. This is also a great time to go through and update all of your online profiles with any new/different information i.e. new gpa/grades, new/better test scores, any new highlight videos you might have, new/updated reference letters or coach recommendations etc. PRO TIP: The more you do now, the easier it is later!

  2. School and live game visits/experience. With college games happening every weekend, this is a great chance for you to get some campus visits in and even catch a game! PRO TIP: If you do decide to visit a school, make sure you’re letting college coaches know that you’ll be on campus and would love to meet them if they have the chance (especially for programs that are actively recruiting you!).

  3. Get your summer schedule figured out. NOW is the time that top club programs are having tryouts and deciding on their summer schedules. Make sure that you know who you’re playing for. ALSO, the best camps fill up and sell out usually by March. If you really want to attend a camp/clinic that can really help your recruiting efforts, start doing your research on those NOW so you have your schedule DIALED IN. PRO TIP: You can check out college social media channels over the next few months to figure out where they plan on recruiting this coming summer to help you make your decisions!

  4. Focus on your own team and skills! This is a great time to really focus on your fitness, your stick work, and improve your lax IQ. This time of year is a great opportunity to really work on your self-development to help you show how much you’ve improved come summer recruiting. PRO TIP: GET BACK TO THE BASICS – make sure you’re doing your wall ball!

Best of luck this season!
